People sometimes assume the American Legion is only for veterans. The Legion itself is — but it is not the whole of what happens at a Post, and that misunderstanding keeps families out who would be welcome.
The four organizations
American Legion Post 200
For wartime-era veterans who served honorably. If you are not certain whether your period of service qualifies, ask rather than assume — the eligibility rules are broader than most people expect.
American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 200
For the mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, grandmothers and granddaughters of those who served. The Auxiliary is not an adjunct; at most Posts, including this one, it does a great deal of the work.
Sons of The American Legion, Squadron 200
For male descendants of veterans. Grandsons and great-grandsons count.
American Legion Riders
For members of any of the above who ride. The Riders are behind the Post's benefit rides and a good deal of its fundraising.
Working out which one applies to you
Between the four, most families with a veteran in them have a route in — often more than one. If you are not sure which fits, ask. It is a short conversation and nobody minds; we would far rather answer the question than have somebody talk themselves out of joining.
What belonging actually involves
Meetings, ceremonies, bingo on Thursdays, fundraisers, and the ordinary business of keeping a hall and a program running in a town of thirteen hundred people. Officers meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM.
It also means being part of something that has been here since December 1933. That is not nothing in a town this size.
