π Texas Boys State
Texas Boys State is one of the most respected and selective civic education programs in the country, sponsored by the American Legion. Each summer, rising high school seniors gather at the University of Texas in Austin to operate their own city, county, and state governments β learning firsthand how democracy works through hands-on participation.
The program began in Texas in 1940 with just 108 participants. Today it serves over 1,100 young men each year, staffed entirely by volunteers including educators, legislators, and alumni.
Who is eligible?
- Incoming high school seniors (between junior & senior year)
- Strong academic performance
- Demonstrated leadership abilities
- U.S. citizens with excellent interpersonal skills
What participants gain
- Real experience in elections & legislative process
- Understanding of rights, duties, and civic responsibility
- Civil discourse and debate skills
- Servant leadership development
- Lifelong friendships with peer leaders across Texas

π ALA Girls State
American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a week-long civic education program for high school juniors, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Participants establish and operate a mock state government, learning about civic responsibility, the political process, and leadership through experiential learning β all while forming meaningful friendships with other young women from across Texas.
Who is eligible?
- Female high school juniors (one semester remaining)
- Public, private, and homeschooled students
- U.S. citizens or legal residents
- Interest in government and community service
What participants gain
- Hands-on experience with state government
- Leadership skills in a competitive environment
- Understanding of citizenship and civic duty
- Connection to the ALA's mission of serving veterans & families
- Participation fees typically covered by sponsoring ALA unit
Sponsored through the American Legion Auxiliary. Local school counselors and our Post can recommend and support qualified candidates.
β American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) is the world's largest women's patriotic service organization. Members are spouses, daughters, granddaughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers of veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during eligible periods of war.
The Auxiliary partners with Post 200 to amplify our community impact β from supporting hospitalized veterans and military families to sponsoring youth programs like Girls State, funding scholarships, and volunteering in the community.
What the ALA does

Who can join the ALA?
- Spouses, daughters, grandchildren of veterans
- Sisters, mothers, grandmothers of veterans
- Veterans themselves are also eligible
- Must have a veteran family member who served in an eligible war era

π¦ Sons of The American Legion
The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) is a patriotic organization open to male descendants of American Legion members and veterans. The SAL carries forward the Legion's values β honoring those who served, supporting veterans, and strengthening communities β across generations.
SAL members are sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, stepsons, and adopted sons of honorably discharged veterans. There is no age limit β members can join as children or adults. The SAL is a "squadron" within Post 200 and works side-by-side with our members on events, fundraisers, and veteran outreach.
What SAL members do
- Volunteer alongside Post 200 members
- Assist with fundraisers and community events
- Support veterans in hospitals and care facilities
- Participate in Americanism and patriotic programs
- Help run Post activities including Bingo nights
Who can join the SAL?
- Sons & grandsons of American Legion members
- Male descendants of any honorably discharged veteran
- Stepsons and adopted sons are welcome
- Open to all ages β no minimum or maximum age
- Female descendants can join through the ALA

Funeral Honors
Post 200 provides military funeral honors for veterans in our community. Families of recently deceased veterans should contact the Post as soon as possible to arrange honors.
Community Ceremonies
We participate in Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and other patriotic observances throughout the year.
